Articles > CM 2008: My Dream Team

It is not always necessarily the best players that make the best teams, this is best illustrated by the Real Madrid 'galacticos' of early 2000. Despite having world class individuals, they struggled to get results as a team because they were not all pulling in the same direction.

This works very much the same way in Championship Manager, whilst it may be tempting to fill your team with all the best players you can get your hands on, it is important to get the right balance. Putting round pegs in round holes.

This is my dream starting eleven in Championship Manager 2008. Although I have never had all of these players in the same team at once, due to financial constraints and the fact that they peak at different times during the game, they have all been important parts of other squads.

Goalkeeper:

In goal, the awesome Petr Cech was an easy first choice, ticking all the right boxes with his goalkeeping attributes. He marginally outmatched Gianluigi Buffon because of his lower eccentricity and the fact that he is four years younger.

Defence:

The defensive line up is extremely strong and I feel that the players are well matched for the formation that they are playing. The likes of Clichy and Richards both have good defensive attributes, but the main allure of these two was their ability to get up and down the touch line, over lapping the wingers and helping the team in the attacking third. Alex and Gonzalo are both strong, tall defenders, who should be able to deal with most aerial threats. They both also have a good turn of pace and excellent tackling and marking attributes.

Midfield:

The midfield is the engine room of the team and as such requires players with good stamina who can play from box to box. One of the best exponents of this type of play on the game is Michael Essien, he is a selfless player who sacrifices individual glory for the good of the team with his work rate, teamwork, stamina and strength. He allows the more attack minded Totti the freedom to use his passing, creativity and dribbling abilities in the attacking third. One of the main strengths of this midfield is the talent that we have on the wings. Their should be an excellent supply line to the forwards, with the likes of McGeady and Lavezzi possessing a good mix of dribbling, crossing, creativity and passing, as well as being speed merchants.

Attack:

In attack, we have two players who are proven to be prolific goal scorers. Although they are opposites in their playing styles, they complement each other well and will form a formidable pairing, with Berbatov's touch, movement and passing ability making him a good target man. He should be able to create space and opportunities for Sahar to expose defences with his pace and finishing ability.

So there you have it, I'm sure that there are a few people out there who don't agree with my assessment. If you think you could create a stronger team, then send me an e-mail with your dream starting eleven, tactic (screenshot not necessary) and your write up, in the same format as I have here - Goalkeeper: Defence: Midfield: Attack - and you could be in with a chance of winning a copy of the soon to be released Championship Manager 2009.

CM FOCUS

CM 2010 section
We will soon be starting work on our new CM 2010 section, which should be up within the next week.

I hope to build up some comprehensive lists of all the best players, tactics, set pieces routines and training schedules.

I am also hoping to start a new Lower League Section, with help and guides for those who chose to start their managerial careers further down the footballing ladder.

If anyone is interested in helping with the Lower League section or any other area of the site, then please send me an e-mail at jonathan@champ-man.com
