It seems that the Coventry board are being a little pessimistic in expecting to be involved in a relegation battle. Despite having a relatively small 500k transfer budget to spend, Coventry should have enough quality in their team to be a stable Championship club.

Coventry have two very good goalkeepers in Konstantopoulos and Marshall. Add to this mix the likes of Gray, Page and De Zeeuw, and Coventry have a very solid base on which to build their squad. The likes of Hall, Giddings and Borrowdale, though, should be considered surplus to requirements.

The midfield department is a bit sparse in terms of quality. Fadiga and Michael Hughes are both decent Championship players, but Coventry could do with a central and right sided midfielder in order to improve their squad. Funds for these players can be generated by the sales of poor players such as Thornton.

Michael Mifsud is Coventry’s star striker but he is unlikely to score 20 goals a season, neither is the next best option Leon McKenzie. Coventry are lightweight up front and a new striker should be sought out as a matter of priority.

Overall, Coventry should be capable of staying in the Championship, if not pushing on further up the league. Their current squad and limited transfer budget may make a promotion challenge unlikely, but there are far poorer teams in this division.
