Celtic Reject Audacious Rangers Bid
Jonathan Wolstenholme has rejected an audacious 3.6m bid from Old Firm rivals, Rangers, to take Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink to Ibrox. Whilst Celtic have already accepted bids, thought to be around 4m, from two unnamed French clubs, they are unwilling to do business with their old foes.

Smith Has Faith in His Players, Rangers manager, Walter Smith, has defended his decision not to bring in any new faces this Summer. He says that the squad which came so close to beating Celtic to the title last year will be even better prepared and more determined this season.

Romanov Predicts Hearts Glory, Hearts' flamboyant chairman, Vladimir Romanov has predicted that the season will end in glory for his team. He says that Angel Chervenkov's men will be the surprise contenders for the SPL title and will make a statement of intent at Parkhead on the opening day.

Irons: Can't Wait for New Season, Gretna manager, David Irons, admits that he cannot wait for the new season to get underway. Gretna face a glamorous opening day fixture at home to Rangers, but their excitement is placated somewhat by their dire financial situation which means they could go out of business before the end of the year.

Long Road Ahead for St. Mirren, Gus MacPherson has admitted that he is pensive ahead of the new SPL season. With little money available with which to add to an already threadbare squad, he is already consigned to a relegation battle.
Newcastle Sign Frings

Newcastle have signed German international, Torsten Frings for 9 million.

The defensive midfielder has arrived at St. James' Park with a big reputation, following a successful spell with Bundesliga team, Schalke, and is expected to play a big part in the Magpies quest for European football.


Sarioglu Joins Birmingham

Premier League new boys Birmingham have broken the bank to sign Turkish international Sabri Sarioglu, from Galatasaray.

The versatile defender had been linked with Rangers before settling on a move to the Midlands.
